Denizens in Bengaluru are struggling to fetch water to meet their basic needs as the city is currently going through an unprecedented water crisis. Industries, schools, fire departments and hotels have been severely affected due to the drought-like situation.
As per reports in some sections of media, the situation in Bengaluru is currently going through ‘Cape Town’ like situation.
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has stated that a total of 257 areas have been affected by the water crisis in the Garden City in four zones.
BWSSB has also released the list of areas that are worst affected. The affected regions are:
Bengaluru South Zone: HSR layout, Bommanahalli, Hoskerehalli, Chikkapete and Yelachenahalli.
Bengaluru West Zone: Rajajinagar 6th Block, Peenya, Bagalgunte, Bapujinagar.
Bengaluru East Zone: KR Puram, Ramamurthynagar, Marathahalli.
Bengaluru North Zone: DJ Halli, Vaialikava.
BWSSB has claimed that the city has adequate water supply to meet the needs of people for the next five months and there is nothing to be alarmed.
Reflecting on the unprecedented situation, BWSSB chairman Prashanth Manohar said, “Despite the ongoing challenges, the water requirement for the next five months is estimated at eight thousand million cubic feet and the city has an adequate water supply to meet these needs.”
“We must clarify this to the people of Bengaluru and also the global citizens about the city. We have 1 crore 40 lakh population in the city and 150 litres of water consumption per person is required on daily basis. The total quantity required for Bengaluru is 200000 mld (million litres per day). Right now, we are getting 10450 mld of water from Cauvery. Currently, the reservoir provides 34 thousand million cubic feet (tmc) of water. The requirement for Bengaluru for the next five months is only eight tmc water. The water from Cauvery will be sufficient till July,” he added.
