In another shocking case of suspected dowry harassment, a lecturer in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district set herself and her three-year-old daughter on fire, leaving the entire community in grief and outrage.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Sarnada village, under the jurisdiction of Dangiyawas police station. The victim, Sanju Bishnoi, returned home from work, sat on a chair, poured petrol over herself and her daughter Yashasvi, and set them both ablaze. Neighbours, alarmed by thick smoke, rushed to the house, but the flames had already engulfed them.

While the child died on the spot, Sanju succumbed to her injuries on Saturday morning during treatment.

A Family Torn Apart

Following Sanju’s death, tensions flared between her parents and her in-laws over the custody of her body. Eventually, after a post-mortem examination, her remains were handed over to her family, and the mother and daughter were cremated together.

Suicide Note and Investigation

A suicide note recovered from the scene paints a harrowing picture of ongoing abuse. In it, Sanju accused her husband, Dilip Bishnoi, along with his mother, father and sister, of relentless harassment and driving her to suicide. She also named a man identified as Ganpat Singh, alleging he harassed her in collusion with her husband.

Police have registered an FIR for harassment and abetment to suicide and are investigating the claims. A forensic team has collected evidence, and Sanju’s mobile phone has been seized to aid the probe.
