Dharmaram was a resident of Barmer village in Rajasthan. He was awarded Shaurya Chakra posthumously for displaying exceptional gallantry during the counter-terror operation in J&K.
May 25, 2015: The day of the incident
On May 25, 2015, the Indian Army received specific intelligence about two heavily armed terrorists hiding in a house in Kazikula, Yaripura. Responding swiftly, Dharmaram along with a team of 15 soldiers went to the site. As the team approached the house around noon, they came under sudden fire from one of the terrorists.
In the midst of the chaos, Dharmaram was ambushed by a second terrorist, hidden inside the building. He was shot twice — once in the leg and once in the back. Despite the grave injuries, he held his ground and retaliated with fierce determination.
His fire brought down Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Akhiyat Allah Bhatt, who tried to flee by jumping off the roof while firing. Dharmaram pumped 30 bullets into him, neutralising the threat.
The brave Indian succumbed to his injuries
Tragically, Dharmaram succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment. His heroism, however, did not go unrecognised. In honour of his selfless act and unmatched bravery, the President of India posthumously awarded him the Shaurya Chakra.
In a related development this week, the Indian armed forces carried out Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India government said the action was aimed at asserting the country’s right to self-defence and eliminating threats before they materialise.
Reinforcing ‘zero-tolerance’ stance on terrorism, officials stressed the nation’s commitment to dismantling cross-border terror networks and preventing future attacks.
The Indian airstrike carried out under Operation Sindoor has not only fuelled a sense of national pride but also provided solace to the families of soldiers lost in previous terrorist attacks.
