The Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a 12.9 km ropeway project connecting Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, informed Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday.
The ambitious project is a part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana, which promises to transform travel to the sacred temple.
Project Details:
The ropeway, estimated to cost Rs 4,081.28 crore, will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model through a public-private partnership, as per a press release by Press Bureau of India (PIB).
The ropeway will employ the state-of-the-art Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S) technology, with a capacity to ferry 1,800 passengers, 36 at a time in one gondola, ensuring smooth connectivity for pilgrims.
Travel time reduced significantly
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the project will dramatically reduce travel time between Sonprayag and Kedarnath from 8-9 hours to just 36 minutes, offering a comfortable and eco-friendly alternative.
Benefits for Pilgrims
Currently, the arduous 16-km uphill trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is covered on foot, ponies, palanquins, or helicopters. The ropeway will provide all-weather connectivity and convenience for pilgrims, many of whom face challenges navigating the difficult terrain.
Boost to Economy
In addition to easing travel, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities during construction and operation phases. It will also benefit allied sectors like hospitality, food & beverages, and tourism, fostering socio-economic growth in the region.
Significance of Kedarnath
Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas, attracting nearly 20 lakh pilgrims annually. The temple opens from Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) to Diwali (October-November).
