Mumbai: Mumbai and Parbhani have the highest rate of absenteeism among students of municipal run schools in the state. In Parbhani, the absenteeism in schools run by municipal councils is 33per cent. In Mumbai city, the absenteeism in civic schools is over 18 per cent and is over 16 per cent in the suburbs.

The worst performing districts in terms on absenteeism are Nanded, Solapur and Dhule, while Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Satara have over 97 percent attendance. The presentation was made by School Education Minister Rajendra Darda at today`s cabinet meeting. The figures which have come out from a census carried out by all district collectors are alarming, Darda told reporters.

Schools run by the Social Justice, Tribal, Rural Development departments, besides the municipal, and the Zilla Parisads runs schools were checked, he informed. Darda said in 19 districts attendance was less than 90 per cent. However, absenteeism did not mean bogus students. "The data will have to be analysed and assessed school wise," he added.

Earlier, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said a committee headed by Chief Secretary Ratnakar Gaikwad has been appointed to recommend actions that need to be taken on the census report. The committee will submit its report in two months.

Darda said the committee will include secretaries of school education, social justice, tribal, rural development, and finance departments among others. The scope of the committee will be to analyse the school data, the actual strength of the students and find out the number of teachers required. The issue is also how to accommodate excess teachers, he said.

Over 95 percent funds alloted to the schools are spent for the teachers salary. The committee will also recommend in two months what action is to be initiated against the guilty, he added.
