A youth narrowly survived drowning while crossing a submerged bridge on his motorcycle in Jharsuguda district on Sunday.

The incident was reported from M Kantapali village in Lakhanpur block. The water was overflowing on the bridge at four feet height following incessant rainfall in the area for the last couple of days.

According to the eyewitnesses, the youth who is a resident of Chhattisgarh was trying to cross the flooded bridge on his bike. But the strong current swept him along with his bike.

The youth was rescued by the locals whereas the motorcycle was washed away in the strong water currents.

In a similar incident, a truck was swept away due to flash flood in MCL mines area in Hemgir block of Sundargarh district.

As per locals, the driver of the vehicle could not judge the flow of the water and decided to cross the flooded road. However, the truck got washed away in the water.

According to IMD, incessant rainfall activity will continue in several parts of Odisha in the next 24 hours.

The well-marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal off North Odisha and West Bengal coasts concentrated into a depression. It is very likely to move west northwestwards and cross West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha coasts close to Digha by today evening.

The Met department has issued ‘Red Warning’ for heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha.
