Tension prevailed at Atharbanki government hospital in Paradip after a doctor on duty allegedly prescribed wrong medicine to a three-year-old child reportedly suffering from dysentery on Monday.
The parents of the child who are residents of the Nehru Bunglow area in the port town, alleged that the doctor at the hospital prescribed medicine for nail infection in place of dysentery.
As per reports, the couple Sailaja Chand and Deepak Chand brought their child to the hospital for treatment after the child developed symptoms of dysentery. After consulting the doctor, the couple took the prescribed medicine from the Niramaya counter.
However, after consuming the medicine, the child reportedly developed vomiting and nausea. The couple rushed to the hospital again where the doctor allegedly told them that it was not his fault, the pharmacist at the Niramaya counter gave them the wrong medicine.
Sailaja Chand, the mother said, “I gave my child 5ml of that medicine as prescribed by the doctor. But as soon as my son consumed it, he vomited it out. I rushed to the hospital where the doctor said while he has prescribed the right medicine, the pharmacist at the Niramaya counter gave her the wrong medicine.”
The father alleged that when they reached the hospital for the second time and protested prescribed wrong medicine by the doctor, the security guard present at the hospital gate snatched the medicine from him and asked the parents to go away.
However, the Chief Physician at the hospital, told reporters, “The medicine was prescribed to apply at the anus of the suffering child. It was not meant to be consumed. The parents made the child consume the lotion, that is why he developed other symptoms.”
Pertinent to mention here that, it is not uncommon in Odisha where doctors are surrounded by accusations of administering wrong medications to patients.
