Students of Ravenshaw University on Wednesday staged a dharna for an indefinite period of time in protest against the Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) order to lock the main gate of the institution in Cuttack after 6 pm.

While the VC has also issued an order to unlock the back gate of the varsity in the evening, it didn’t go down well with several sections of students.

The members of Ravenshaw students’ union staged a demonstration against the order in front of the educational institution stating that it will pose a threat to their lives.

They demanded that the status quo in the varsity campus should be maintained as per the earlier provision.

“The back gate of the varsity is near Chhatra Bazar and there is a danger that anti-social elements will enter the varsity campus posing a threat to the lives of the students,” said Ritesh Kumar Sahoo, a student leader.

“So many trucks carrying different goods are passing through the market on a regular basis. As the main gate will be closed in the evening, students will depend on the back gate to go for their daily chores. It will be quite dangerous for them to pass through the busy market on a regular basis,” added Sahoo.

“We will continue our strike for an indefinite period of time till our demands are met,” said another protestor.
