The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has sought reports from Odisha Chief Secretary, director general of police (DGP) and ADG of crime branch on murderous attacks on its member Ananta Nayak in Keonjhar district.
Nayak was allegedly attacked twice in a span of two days which raised several questions on the security of the officials. Nayak claimed that he had informed the Superintendent of Police (SP) about his visit and termed the attacks on him as 'sponsored'.
As per sources, some people waylaid Nayak near Kanjipani police station on the pretext of sharing their grievances and launched an attack.
“Today I have visited Balabhadrapur Panchayat of Telkoi block to hear the grievances of people. Around 300 locals gheraoed me Kanjipani to register their complaint, but they have some other plans. They launched attacked on us. My team members were also injured,” Nayak said.
He added, “The district administration has not given us proper security, due to which such incident has happened.”
Later, Nayak took another route to reach Balabhadrapur, where he listened to the grievances of the tribals.
As per reports, two days ago, Nayak was attacked in Bhangamunda of Harichandanpur block.
Speaking on the matter, tribal leader Kiran Bala Naik said that this is a conspiracy to stop the commission formed to give justice to the tribals of the district.
“The development of tribals may be hurting a section of people, that’s why they are opposing the commission,” tribal leader Kiran Bala said.
She accused the district administration of shielding the attackers thereby encouraging such activities relentlessly.
The chairperson of the panel has asked the State Chief Secretary, DGP and ADG of Crime Branch to submit a report on the attacks on Nayak within three days.
