The Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), in Sambalpur district of Odisha, has decided to deduct marks and impose monetary penalty on six senior students involved in a ragging incident at the institute in December last year.
The disciplinary action against the six students-three each from Production Engineering and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (El & TE)-has been initiated following the recommendations of the Disciplinary Committee and subsequent approval of the Vice-Chancellor.
The technical varsity authorities have decided to deduct one grade point in the first two subjects appeared in the current 7th end-semester examination-2021 of the implicated students. In addition, a fine of Rs 15,000 each has been imposed on all the six students.
“The fine amount should be deposited by the parents in the account of Dean, Students' Welfare by January 31, 2022,” the institute said in a statement.
Manash Singh, a second year student of Production Engineering has also been warned to act sensibly for ‘bringing discipline in the campus’.
Further, all the implicated students and their parents have been asked to submit declaration /undertaking in prescribed format in the office of the Dean, Students' Welfare by January 31, 2022.
The ragging incident pertains to the alleged assault and abuse of a second year student of the institute by some seniors took place in the campus on December 17, 2021. Separate complaints were filed in this regard with the Burla police station and VSSUT authorities.
Incidents of ragging are not new to the technical university situated at Burla of Sambalpur district.
Acting tough against such indiscipline, the VSSUT authorities had last year handed down two years’ suspension to two students and rusticated 10 others for one year for ragging and physically harassing a third-year B.Tech student of the university.
