In a shocking instance of gross negligence and recklessness at a government hospital in Odisha, a patient was allegedly administered a wrong injection and saline by health workers at the Santha Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital in Bolangir, on Monday.
As per reports, Khedu Samal, a resident of Saintala area, was admitted to the hospital after he complained of abdominal pain on Sunday. The doctor, after inspecting Samal, prescribed him some injections and saline. However, an unidentified health worker administered the injection and saline meant for another patient to Samal on Monday.

"We rushed him (Khedu Samal) to the hospital after he experienced abdominal pain on Sunday night. The doctor prescribed him some injections and saline and those were given to him yesterday. However, today (Monday), some health worker administered the injection and saline prescribed for Hari Mahaling, who has kidney ailments and backbone issues, to my father" said Nuakhai Samal, Khedu's son.
The family members, after learning about the matter, immediately informed the doctor on duty.
Following the incident, the family members of the patient are in a state of panic, fearing the adverse impacts of 'wrong' injection and saline on Samal.
The health workers at the hospital admitted that saline had been administered to Samal by mistake. They further explained that a similar bottle of saline had been prescribed for the other patient which was the cause for the confusion.
"I was informed that incorrect saline was injected to a patient in the male ward. I rushed to the patient and found that the injections had been exchanged. However, both are high antibiotics with the same configuration and of the same group. There is nothing to fear as both the patients won't develop any side effects following administration of the drugs. Nevertheless, the truth behind the faux pass can be ascertained from the health worker who administered the injections," said the on duty doctor C Marndi at the emergency ward.
However, the doctors are keeping Samal on close observation to immediately address any problem in case he developed any reaction due to the incorrect medication.
