A sexagenarian farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Nakulguda under Bisingpur police station in Koraput district.
Police, meanwhile, registered an unnatural death case in this connection.
“My father had grown paddy crops on three acres of land after taking Rs 70,000 loan. However, he got into depression after paddy crops raised by him were damaged owing to incessant rain caused by low pressure”, said Dambru’s son Ramesh.
The deceased’s neighbour Keshav said, “He consumed poison at his farmland on Sunday and started vomiting after coming home. He was taken to the hospital on the same day. Despite doctors’ attempt he died.”
It is learnt that flood has ruined crops raised on hectares of land across the state. Vegetables grown in the farmland in Cuttack, Khurda and Puri districts have also been severely damaged due to the flood.
Many farmers who have grown seasonal vegetables and paddy after taking loans have incurred huge losses due to the flood. They had availed loans for cultivation from cooperative societies and banks. After incurring losses, they are staring at uncertainty.
