Eminent litterateur, educationist and former editor of Odia newspaper ‘The Samaja’, Manorama Mohapatra passed away on Saturday at the age of 87.
As per initial reports, Mohapatra was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack today after she complained of chest pain. She passed away while undergoing treatment.
Mohapatra was born in 1934. She is the daughter of renowned freedom fighter and former Editor of The Samaj, Dr Radhanath Rath.
She was conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984. She was the head of the Odisha Sahitya Akademi in 1991.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the passing away of Mohapatra and said she played a key role in creating awareness about various social issues, especially the rights of women.
The CM said as an Editor of ‘The Samaja’, she maintained high ideals in the field of journalism. She also played an important role in the field of social service.
BJP National vice-president Baijayant Panda also condoled the demise of Mohapatra and termed it an irreparable loss to the Odia literary world.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed grief over the passing away of Manorama Mohapatra.
Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan said, "I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Manorama Mohapatra, former editor of Odia newspaper 'The Samaja'. She demonstrated her skills in journalism by working as an editor for many years.
Expressing grief over the death of Manorama Mohapatra, Odisha Congress chief Niranjan Patnaik said she will be remembered for her deep insight, integrity and social service.
