The Odisha government continues to face mounting pressure from the Opposition parties over lady teacher Mamita Meher murder case with the student wing of Congress party on Tuesday holding a massive protest in Bhubaneswar demanding removal of Minister of State (MoS) for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra.
Members of the Chhatra Congress took out a rally to gherao the camp office of the State Director General of Police (DGP) and Naveen Niwas, the official residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. However, the activists were stopped by the police midway near Forest Park.
A scuffle broke out between the police personnel and protestors when the latter tried to break barricades and march ahead. Some agitators reportedly hurled tomatoes at the policemen. The police have picked up several protestors following the scuffle.
“Investigation is not being conducted properly into Mamita Meher murder case. Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra should have been in jail had proper probe been carried out. Shielding of the culprits in the case by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has deeply hurt the people of Odisha,” alleged Yasir Nawaz, State president of Chhatra Congress.
“The 4.5 crore people of Odisha are waiting for the moment when the actual culprit is arrested and sent behind bar and justice is delivered to Mamita Meher,” Yasir added.
Congress leader Satya Prakash Nayak, Rajat Choudhury and MLA Suresh Routray also took part in the protest rally.
Speaking on the issue, Satya Prakash Nayak said, “The clean chit of police (to Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra) is an evil attempt by the State government to hush up the case probe.”
