Family members of a girl (bride) in Odisha called off her wedding after they came to know that the groom to be had been married earlier. The incident has been reported from Chaulasukha village in Bolangir district

Sources said the bride side had asked the groom, identified as Laxmikant Tiwari, to invite a maximum of 150 persons for the marriage procession (barat). However, to their surprise, Tiwari showed up in the village alone on the wedding day on Monday.

Finding no one accompanying Tiwari for the important ceremony, the villagers became suspicious and detained him, sources added.

When probed thoroughly by the villagers, Tiwari broke down and admitted that he is already married.

“Only two to three drummers accompanied the groom in the wedding procession.  We became both surprised and suspicious to see no one accompanying him on his D-day,” said Jali Sahu, mother of the bride.

“The gold jewellery he had given for the marriage turned out to be fake imitations. He also demanded some cash in dowry,” the bride’s mother alleged.

When informed about the incident, the Kantabanji police reached the village and rescued the groom from the clutches of the angry villagers.
