Hundreds of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students staged a protest outside the Directorate of Secondary Education (DSE) in Bhubaneswar on Thursday demanding amendments in the eligibility criteria for the recently notified PET teacher posts.

According to sources, the students sit in a dharna in front of the DSE located on the sixth floor of the Heads of Departments building (Nataala) and shouted slogans against the Directorate.

Apprehending disturbances the authorities have locked the main gate of the building premises, sources added.

Recently, the Odisha government had released an official notification for recruitments against 4619 vacancies for the post of contractual teachers including 1260 Physical Education Teacher (PET) posts.

As per the notification, the candidates who have qualified +2 or its equivalent examination from a recognised institution with minimum 50% marks in aggregate (45% or SC/ST/PH/ SEBC candidates) and C.P.Ed./ B.P.Ed./ M.P. Ed from a recognized Board/University can apply for the PET posts.

However, the students demand to amend the educational qualification criteria stating that those who have secured less mark in Plus II examination cannot apply for the post even though they posses BPED certificates.

“We have raised the issue before the concerned Minister and director. However, all our demands have fallen in deaf ears. We will continue our protest until our demands are met,” said an agitating student.

“I have qualified BPED. But for the post, the State government is asking 50 per cent marks in Plus II examination. Even after approaching the Minister and director, they are yet to come up with a solution,” said another agitating student.
