To end his prolonged sufferings, 37-year-old Amit Jain, a resident of Kantabanji town in Bolangir district, has appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind to give him permission to carry out euthanasia.
Amit says the circumstances have forced him to take this ultimate decision.
In 2009, he met with an accident and lost his right leg and right hand’s mobility. His life has now been confined to wheel chair and bed.
“What hurts me to the core is that my case is 10-year old but not a single hearing has so far been held,” complains Amit.
For the insurance money and financial assistance for his treatment, Amit says he has been running from pillar to post but to no avail.
“I have taken up my problem with the police administration, tehsildar, District Collector, CMO and PMO. After waiting for long 10 years, it was when I did not get any response, I was left with no option but to seek the President’s permission for euthanasia,” says Amit.
Meanwhile, Amit’s father has died from cancer while his elder brother Shailendra is struggling with the killer disease. They have a small shop and despite difficulties, Shailendra is somehow running it to keep the wolf from the door.
Narrating the difficult phase the family has been passing through, Amit’s brother Shailendra says, “Our father’s cancer was detected in 2007. As if that was not enough, I was detected to be a cancer patient in 2008. Thereafter, he (Amit) started looking after the business. In 2009, he met with an accident and had to get his right leg amputated.”
