Bhubaneswar: At a time when the entire State is reeling under second Covid-19 wave, detection of fatal Black Fungus infection also known as Mucormycosis in some recovered patients in Odisha has sparked serious concerns.
According to reports, the serious infection is being widely reported among COVID-19 survivors in the country.
Explaining about mucormycosis or black fungus, senior health expert Dr Niraj Mishra shared some crucial tips for prevention of the infection in Covid-recovered persons.
“Those who have recovered from Covid must avoid exposure to soil as black fungus infection is caused by fungi found in the soil.
Black fungus infection is common among those Covid-19 patients who are diabetic. They should wear mask, full shirt and pant to avoid exposure to soil,” Mishra advised.
“Strict monitoring of sugar levels, rational use of steroids and proper planning of other medication in co-morbid patients will help in a long way in ensuring prevention of this disease,” he emphasised.
If someone notices redness and swelling in eyes and nose, blood or black discharge from the nose, then they must consult doctor as these are primary symptoms of mucormycosis, Mishra said, adding that if the symptoms are ignored then it might spread to the lungs and brain, and cause difficulties in breathing.
The infection is very rare but fatal. But, if treated early, it is curable and this is not contagious.
“Use of mask, covering skin by wearing full shirt and pant and use of gun boots and gloves during gardening to avoid contact of soil can keep the infection at bay,” Mishra said.
