Tension gripped the Biju Patnaik College in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday after scores of students staged a demonstration over the alleged misbehaviour by some teachers with girl students. The protesting students staged a dharna and even blocked the main road in front of the college demanding action against the misbehaving teachers.
The students alleged that some teachers were repeatedly threatening them with the award of poor marks in the exams when they raised voice against the latter’s ill-treatment towards the girl students. One of the two teachers in question allegedly made abusive remarks while the other misbehaved with the girl students.
“One of the teachers used to touch girl students inappropriately and used to telephone them at odd hours at night. Some girls stopped coming to the college fearing repetition of such indecent acts. We want the concerned teacher should tender a public apology,” said a protesting student.
A girl student said, “The said teacher would scold us using filthy language. We had informed the College Principal about the happenings, but no action was taken against him.”
Following the protest today, senior Commissionerate Police officials reached the College campus and held discussion with the agitating students and college authorities.
“The students had staged demonstration over three demands including inappropriate behaviour of some teachers. When we asked the students to file a written complaint, they said they wanted to resolve the matter amicably,” said ACP Sanjeev Satpathy.
Satpathy said the College Principal has already been urged to conduct an inquiry into the allegations of the students through designated internal committee.
