Three persons, including the middleman and a couple were arrested by Jharpokharia Police in connection with the alleged trading of a one-month-old boy in Mayurbhanj district.

The mother of the baby, identified as Malati Diga of Sankhabhanga village under Jharpokharia police limits in the district, had filed an FIR with the Jharpokharia Police on Sunday in this regard.

As per sources, Malati had delivered the baby boy last month. However, as the baby was not keeping well, she decided to take him for treatment at Sirsa Community Health Centre (CHC).

On August 22, when she was going to the CHC along with her baby, the middleman, who is yet to be identified, detained her midway near Saraskana and took her with him. He tried to lure her by offering money and other things and asked to hand over the infant to him.

When Malati refused, the man forcibly took the newborn from her and fled the spot, the woman alleged in her complaint before the police.

“He gave me Rs 1,100 and took the baby forcibly from me. I tried chasing him but he escaped in a vehicle. I don’t know him,” said the complainant, Malati.

On Sunday, Jharpokharia Police swung into action and rescued the baby from Rairangpur.

Police have arrested the three persons—the middleman who sold the baby and a couple who bought the infant from him, informed Baripada Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) KK Hariprasad.

Meanwhile, the infant has been admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at PRM Medical College & Hospital for treatment. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
