Puri: Three days after a priest of the Sri Jagannath temple was gunned down by miscreants, another person was shot dead in the sea-side pilgrim town, police said here on Sunday.

Unidentified miscreants chased Surya Narayan Mohanty (32) down the street in Shreekshetra colony area here on Saturday night and shot him dead after attacking him with lethal weapons, Superintendent of police Anup Kumar Sahu said.

The victim was playing cards with friends when motorcycle borne youths attacked him. Mohanty unsuccessfully attempted to save himself but lost his life. The attackers fled the scene with motorbikes even as onlookers were mute spectators to the unfolding incident.

Attributing the incident to rivalry between two groups, the SP said about a dozen cases were pending against Mohanty in different police stations.

He was taken to the district headquarters hospital here where doctors declared him brought dead.

The incident had created panic among the people in the tourist resort town. Earlier on August 22, Guna Sinhari alias Talachhu Bhagaban Mohapatra, a priest at Sri Jagannath Temple was gunned down by some miscreants.

No one had been arrested in the incidents and efforts are on to nab the culprits, he said.
