Cuttack: The city police arrested and forwarded to court one Sambham Kumar Acharya (25) of Jajpur district for allegedly duping innocent persons at ATM counters.

Police also recovered from him currency notes worth Rs 85,000, an axe and a stolen motorcycle yesterday.

The accused confessed before the police that he had deposited Rs 45,000 in bank and given Rs 60,000 to his father recently.

Police believe that the accused was involved in at least a dozen duping cases in Cuttack and Jajpur districts, investigations on which are going on.

Cuttack DCP Praveen Kumar said Purighat police of the city while investigating into a theft motorcycle case stumbled upon Sambham who was loitering at an ATM counter covering his face with a handkerchief.

?The poplice became suspicious after watching his movement and so made a search which yielded an axe and cash worth Rs 85000 in his possession?, the DCP said.

It was prima facie learnt that the youth under the guise of a caring soul used to offer his help to innocent ATM users for withdrawing cash and then used to dupe them.

?He either stole the ATM card or exchanged them with fake ones. In some instances, the accused used a pin under the cancel button of the ATM machine and withdrew cash immediately after someone had just operated the machine?, the police said.

Investigation showed Sambham recently duped a customer of Rs 18,000 from Chandikhol counter and Rs 20,000 from another ATM user in Badachana ATM counter.
