Chennai: Faced with rebels in some constituencies, DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi on Monday drew analogy from India`s team spirit in winning the World Cup to appeal to his cadres to sink their differences and ensure the party`s victory in the April 13 Assembly elections.

Returning here after his second leg of campaign, Karunanidhi, aiming for his sixth term as chief minister, said he noticed differences of opinion in a few places, though "it was to the minimum".

"This will affect our efforts in weaving a beautiful silk saree. If anybody starts thinking that what is the benefit I will get if I work for the victory of this man, it will affect our efforts in weaving the saree," he said.

Likening the success in the electoral battle to India`s historic win in ICC World Cup, Karunanidhi, an avid follower of cricket, said though only eleven could play the match for the country, Indians all over the world had enjoyed and nobody thought they had no role in it.

"Likewise, only 234 (Tamil Nadu assembly strength) can win.

If anybody starts thinking that they have no role in the win, they are ignorant of patriotism. Everybody should compete in striving for success. If a fielder starts thinking of benefits of taking a catch since the credit will go to the bowler, it will be disastrous to the entire team," he said.

Karunanidhi`s comments in party organ `Murasoli` come against the backdrop of rebels from both DMK and Congress, the second largest alliance partner, being in the fray for the elections that are expected to be a close race between the ruling combine and AIADMK-led front.

DMK is facing rebels in four constituencies and the Congress in eight, causing concern for the front.

This is the second time Karunanidhi is making an appeal to his workers to put up a united fight after his earlier plea to the rebels to pull out of the contest.
