Berhampur: An India Reserve Battalion (IRB) constable was shot dead by miscreants who also hurled bombs at him in Ganjam district, police said on Friday.

The deceased identified as 33-year-old Toffan Bisoi of IRB Koraput was shot dead by the miscreants at Bhanjanagar, about 80 km from here on Thrusday night, when he was heading towards hotel Blue Moon.

Police said a group of motor-cycle borne miscreants first hurled bombs targeting the jawan. Later they fired at him when he tried to escape.

Following the incident, police have formed three teams and search is on to nab the assailants.

 
Preliminary investigation point towards past rivalry which is suspected to be the reason behind yesterday’s incident.

"The situation is normal and efforts are on to nab the culprits," said sub divisional police officer (SDPO-Bhanjanagar) S C Jamadar.

Similar incident of bombing had also been reported in Belguntha market near Bhanjanagar.

As per reports, motor-cycle borne miscreants hurled bombs at some of the youths traveling in an SUV and fired blank shots to create panic.

However, no one has been reportedly injured in the incident as the youths managed to escape from the SUV safely. Police have started the investigation but the culprits are yet to be traced.
