In a significant blow to Hamas’ leadership in Gaza, Muhammad Sinwar, a key commander and brother of slain former chief Yahya Sinwar, has been killed in a targeted Israeli drone strike, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Wednesday.

This announcement follows days of speculation after a massive May 14 airstrike that struck an underground Hamas command center. Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) initially withheld confirmation, but sources now reveal that Sinwar succumbed to critical injuries sustained during the precision operation.

The Rise of Muhammad Sinwar

Muhammad Sinwar was not just a shadow of his infamous brother Yahya, but a force in his own right. Known within intelligence circles as a strategic operative, Sinwar was instrumental in orchestrating rocket attacks, smuggling operations, and the construction of Gaza's vast tunnel network, often dubbed the "Metro of Terror."

From financing to field operations, Sinwar wore many hats. He reportedly directed Hamas fighters in guerrilla warfare tactics and played a key role in planning hostage-taking missions and cross-border infiltrations during the October 2024 clashes — the same conflict where his brother Yahya was eliminated by Israeli forces.

The Strike That Ended It All

On May 14, Sinwar was reportedly inside a heavily fortified underground bunker — used as a covert command hub — when Israeli intelligence pinpointed his location. A high-precision drone strike ensued. Though critically injured, he was rushed to the European Hospital in Khan Younis, where he later died.

Netanyahu, addressing the media, stated:

“This is a message to all those who saw terror: You can run, you can hide, but justice will be served.”

A Crumbling Command

With Muhammad Sinwar’s death, Hamas’ top brass in Gaza has been significantly weakened. Only a handful of high-ranking leaders remain, many of whom are believed to be in hiding or operating from bunkers outside Gaza.

The operation marks another turning point in Israel’s ongoing campaign to dismantle the militant group’s infrastructure and eliminate its leadership layer-by-layer.

The Walls Are Closing In

Sinwar’s death isn't just the fall of a militant; it symbolizes the tightening grip of Israeli counterterrorism operations on Hamas' remaining leadership. As the group reels from the loss of yet another key figure, it also sends a clear signal: the days of impunity for terror masterminds in Gaza are over.
