Lemon is used in almost every household. Be it for adding that tangy taste to a dish or making a lemonade or even as a cosmetic, lemon has multiple uses and benefits. Hence is very commonly used with almost every food or diet. What everyone overlooks, although it is a citrus fruit that is rich in vitamin C it can also have some side effects or may create problems when paired with certain foods.
Health experts have found that when Vitamin C-rich lemon is paired with certain foods it leads to digestive issues and discomfort. Here are a few foods which do not go well when paired with lemon
Milk and dairy products
The citric acid in lemon causes curdling of milk and other dairy products when eaten together. Thus, it spoils the texture of the food when it goes inside. Apart from that pairing these foods with lemon can also cause heartburn and acidity issues.
Spicy food items
Spicy foods have high heat. When paired with lemon, the heat level of the food item intensifies. Also adding lemon juice to dishes that are already spicy makes them taste bitter after some time.
Seafood
Pairing seafood with lemon is very common. But from a health point of view, it should not be done because it usually overpowers the delicate and original flavour of the seafood. Replacing lemon with orange is a better idea.
Red wine
Red wine-based sauces and dishes have a distinct taste and flavour. When paired with lemon it can interfere with the sharp taste of red wine thereby taking out the joy of enjoying that particular drink or dish.
Alkaline vegetables
The acidic nature of lemon affects the colour of alkaline vegetables like spinach. If lemon juice is used in a spinach-based dish, its colour will automatically change from fresh green to dark green. That is why most of the time, lemon juice is added to such dishes just before serving.
