Patients visiting Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital (FMMCH) in Balasore can now avail laser surgery service in the medical institute.
The advanced medical treatment known by the name ‘Laser Proctology’ was rolled out at the hospital on Sunday.
On the first day, six patients suffering from rectum related diseases were operated with laser.
Under the personal supervision of surgery specialist of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI)’s Odisha branch, Dr Sushil Kumar Pattanayak and noted laser surgeon from Kolkata, Dr Kalyan Kar, the operations were performed.
The patients were initially shortlisted and a workshop of surgeons was conducted following which the patients were operated under guidance of specialists offering their expertise through video conferencing.
“With the introduction of the Laser Proctology, we will now be able to operate patients without using scalpel,” said Dr Saroj Raj.
“Earlier we used to do such operations through open surgery. In case of open surgery, the patients would suffer acute pain and stay in hospital minimum for a week. Now, with the introduction of the service, such patients can be discharged on the day of operation itself,” added Dr Raj.
