Bhubaneswar: Former Orissa Ranji captain Pravanjan Mallick was on Tuesday forwarded to judicial custody after his bail plea was rejected by a local court. The cricketer was arrested by city police on Monday for allegedly beating his wife yesterday.

As per reports, Pravanjan called up his estranged wife Sini Mohanty to meet at Master Canteen Square on the pretext of Valentines Day yesterday. However, Pravanjan allegedly bashed up his wife inside the car following an altercation and threw her out of the vehicle.

Sini lodged a complaint with the Mahila police station here following which Pravanjan was detained for some time and later was arrested.

Today, Pravanjan was produced before the SDJM court and later sent to Jharpada jail as his bail petition was rejected.

A case was registered against him under section 498(A) (torture), 323 (assault), 506 (threatening) and 307 (attempt to murder) based on the complaint lodged by his wife.

“Basing on complaint, the complainant was sent for medical examination. His medical report suggests fresh injuries following which he was arrested and forwarded to court,” DCP Himanshu Lal said.

Besides, Sini alleged that Pravanjan used to repeatedly ill treat her in the past. For this reason, Sini was staying at her parent’s place, the complainant said.

“He was under the influence of alcohol. He was completely drunk and he started beating me on petty issue. He is being very violent and used to torture me. My life was not peaceful,” Sini said.

Though Pravanjan and his family members refused to comment on the matter, Pravanjan’s coach, however, said that the matter should be resolved through dialogue.

“Family disputes should be resolved through dialogue,” Pravanjan’s coach Kshirod Behera said.

It may be mentioned here that a divorce case has been filed in the court and the duo had also attended counseling sessions in the past.
