The Hera Panchami ritual, an integral part of the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath and His Siblings, will be observed with traditional fervour and devotion at the Srimandir in Puri on Tuesday.
The ritual reflects a unique divine episode symbolising Goddess Lakshmi's displeasure over being left behind as Lord Jagannath embarks on his annual sojourn to the Gundicha Temple, along with His Siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
According to tradition, on the fifth day of Rath Yatra, Goddess Lakshmi, overcome with rage and longing, secretly proceeds to the Gundicha Temple in a palanquin. She arrives with her entourage to confront Lord Jagannath for leaving her at the Srimandir without informing her.
In a symbolic act of anger and protest, she damages a part of the Nandighosa chariot, on which Lord Jagannath was brought to the Gundicha Temple.
The ritual showcases the divine leela between the Lord and the Goddess, blending spiritual beliefs and emotional undertones.
Meanwhile, Lord Jagannath continues to give darshan to devotees at the Adapa Mandap within the Gundicha Temple premises.
This unique tradition, rooted deeply in Jagannath culture, beautifully highlights the spiritual emotions associated with the divine couple and adds a distinct cultural richness to the ongoing Rath Yatra festival in the holy city of Puri.
