On the sacred occasion of Mahalaya, the concluding day of Pitru Paksha, thousands of devotees thronged Puri on Sunday to perform Shraddha and Pinda Daan rituals for their ancestors.

At the northern gate of Srimandir, along the Mahodadhi shore, and at various Tirtha Pushkarinis, devotees offered til tarpan to three generations of their paternal and maternal forefathers, praying for the peace and liberation of their souls.

According to belief, during Pitru Paksha, forefathers descend to the earthly realm, and rituals such as Shraddha, Pinda Daan, and Tarpan are performed to honour their memory and seek blessings for the family’s well-being.

Significance of Mahalaya Amavasya

It is believed that performing Pinda Daan on this day ensures peace and salvation for departed souls.

The Mahalaya rituals are also underway at Shwetaganga Pushkarini, Markandeya Pushkarini, Narendra Pushkarini, and Indradyumna Pushkarini. Devotees offered pindas made of flour, rice, and even Mahaprasad to their forefathers as part of the sacred rites.

Voices of the Devotees

One local devotee said, “We are here to offer shraddha and cleaned our entire house before doing so.”

Another devotee offering shraddha added, “We hope that our forefathers rest in peace and bless us on this day.”

Arrangements for the Congregation

In view of the large gathering, elaborate arrangements were made by the district administration, police, and Srimandir authorities to ensure the smooth conduct of the rituals.
