Brahmacharini is the second among the Navdurga form of Devi Adishakti. Here the word Bramha means Tapasya which is roughly translated as austerities or penances.

The word Bramhacharini also signifies Tapacharini, one who follows austerities or penances.

According to different versions of her story, maiden Parvati on the advice of Davarshi Narad did tapasya to marry Lord Shiva.

She continued her tapasya for thousands of years.

Because of her severe austerities, the three worlds of Swarg, Mrityu and Patal started experiencing an upheaval. Devatas, Rishis and Munis praise the tapasya of Bramhacharini Devi.

Bramhadev praised her saying no one has done such severe austerities till date and blessed her to get Lord Shankar as her husband.

If this second form of Goddess Durga is worshipped, the power of meditation, sacrifice, austerity and control of self increases. Yogis on this day concentrate on the Swadhistan chakra.
