In a deeply disturbing case of dowry harassment, a young woman from Muzaffarpur has alleged that her in-laws demanded her kidney when she couldn’t fulfill their demand for a motorbike post-marriage. The sensational claim has sent shockwaves across the state and prompted the local police to launch an investigation.
As per the FIR filed at the Mahila Police Station in Muzaffarpur, the woman said that her husband and his family began harassing her a few months after their marriage. When her family failed to provide a motorbike as dowry, the in-laws allegedly pressured her to donate a kidney instead.
“They first demanded a bike. When my family said they couldn’t afford it, they said I should at least give a kidney,” the woman claimed in her statement to the police.
The case has sparked outrage on social media and renewed calls for stricter implementation of anti-dowry laws in India. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 498A (cruelty by husband or relatives), and are currently verifying the allegations.
“A case has been registered and we are investigating the matter seriously,” a police officer from the Mahila Police Station told Indian Express.
This bizarre dowry demand has drawn attention to the growing number of unconventional and exploitative forms of dowry harassment still prevalent in parts of the country, despite decades of legal reform.
