The arrest of Sandalwood actress Ranya Rao, the daughter of Karnataka DGP K. Ramachandra Rao, a senior IPS officer, has sent shockwaves across the state.
Actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport on March 4, 2025, after Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials intercepted her Emirates flight from Dubai. Authorities recovered 14.8 kg of gold (valued at Rs 12–14.8 crore) concealed in a specially designed belt strapped to her body and 800 grams of gold ornaments hidden in her clothing. She had made four Dubai trips in 15 days, triggering surveillance.
DGP Distances Himself from Ranya Rao:
Meanwhile, the DGP has distanced himself from her actions. He maintained that he and his family had no connection to his daughter’s activities.
“She got married four months ago and hasn’t visited us since. We are unaware of her on her husband’s business dealings. This has come as a huge shock and disappointment. The law will take its course,” he claimed.
Ranya had been on the DRI’s radar due to her frequent foreign trips. This was reportedly her 10 short trips to the Gulf since January 2025.
Investigation into Syndicate Links:
DRI suspects Ranya’s involvement in a smuggling network operating through Bengaluru airport. Officials are reviewing her travel history (10+ international trips in 2025) and examining potential collusion with law enforcement. Past incidents include her 2016 arrest by Gujarat police and alleged links to Kolkata-based criminal Panchakshari Swamy, though direct ties remain unconfirmed.
Legal Proceedings and Industry Background:
Remanded to 14-day judicial custody, Ranya faces charges under the Customs Act. Known for films like Maanikya (2014) and Pataki, her arrest has sparked debates about celebrity accountability and systemic corruption in gold smuggling.
Method of Smuggling and Protocol Exploitation:
Ranya allegedly exploited airport protocol services meant for senior bureaucrats. A protocol officer escorted her past security checks, enabling her to bypass frisking. She was picked up in a government vehicle, which investigators believe was part of a strategy to avoid scrutiny. CCTV footage from previous trips showed she wore similar outfits to conceal the gold belt.
