About Minoo Mumtaz

Minoo Mumtaz was born on 26 April 1942 and was one of nine siblings. Her father Mumtaz Ali, was an artist and a dance teacher. However, his struggle with alcohol left the family in financial straits, placing the burden on young Minoo.

Minoo Mumtaz, originally named Malikunnisa Ali, earned a distinguished identity in the industry for her dancing and acting prowess. She got her big break at the age of 13 when filmmaker Nanubhai Vakil offered her a role in the 1955 film Hakim.

Though her mother initially disapproved, Minoo pursued her passion and quickly rose to fame. By the age of 14, she had already become a recognised name in Hindi Film Industry. He worked in movies such as Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Kaagaz Ke Phool and Howrah Bridge. She consistently worked throughout the 1950s and 1960s cementing her place in the industry. However, her career was not without controversy.

Minoo Mumtaz Romanced Her Real Brother!

Minoo Mumtaz became a subject of controversy after she romanced with her brother on screen. This incident led to public outrage and backlash and moviegoers demanded to ban her from films.

The uproar occurred over her role in the song ‘Gora Rang Chunariya Kaali‘ from the film Howrah Bridge, where she romanced her real brother. Her brother was none other than Mehmood.

Minoo Mumtaz's Personal Life

Minoo Mumtaz married director S. Ali Akbar in 1963 and left the film industry. After giving birth to four children, she relocated abroad. She passed away in 2021.
