Malayalam actor Navya Nair found herself in trouble during her visit to Australia after she failed to declare jasmine flowers she was carrying in her handbag. The incident took place at Melbourne International Airport, where Australian authorities imposed a fine of AUD 1,980, roughly Rs 1.14 lakh, under the country’s strict biosecurity laws.

Flowers That Led to a Fine

Nair, who had travelled to Melbourne to attend Onam celebrations organized by the Malayali Association of Victoria, later revealed that her father had bought the flowers for her before she left Kochi. He suggested she wear one strand and keep the other in her bag. Unfortunately, this oversight led to a penalty when airport officials discovered the undeclared flowers.

Navya’s Reaction: “Ignorance Is No Excuse”

Speaking about the incident at a public event, the actor admitted her mistake. “Ignorance is no excuse,” she said, acknowledging the importance of following local laws. She also posted a video on social media wearing the traditional Onam saree with jasmine in her hair, captioned humorously, “The drama just before paying the fine!!!” Later, she replaced it with a simple flower emoji.

Australia’s Strict Rules

Australia enforces tough biosecurity regulations to protect its agriculture from pests and diseases. Travellers must declare any plant material upon arrival. Violations can result in hefty fines, criminal charges, or even visa cancellations.

Navya complied by paying the fine within 28 days and called the episode a valuable lesson, one that highlights the need for awareness while travelling abroad.
