The 'Circus' actor set-off his acting career in the late 1980s. He was seen in different popular television serials like Circus, Fauji, etc. Then he didn't find himself as capable to step into Bollywood. However, he later changed his mind and decided to take over acting as his full-time career. He stepped into Bollywood and signed four films. Though he signed Dil Aashna Hai first, his silver screen debut was with Deewana.
Deewana, released in 1992, also starred Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti in the lead. SRK played the second male lead in the movie. The movie went on to become a blockbuster and SRK bagged the Best Male Debut award at the 38th Filmfare Awards, while Divya Bharti got the Best Female Debut award.
Even as the 'Chak De' actor earned tons of plaudits for his role in his debut movie, and from where the actor never looked back, still he seems not convinced about his acting skills in the film.
While talking to Filmfare about his debut film Deewana, SRK once said, “I’m glad the film has done so well. But I don’t think I’ve contributed in any way to its success. My performance was awful-loud, vulgar and uncontrolled. I overacted terribly and I take full responsibility for it."
Later, he clarified the reasons behind such criticism.
"But that’s what happens when you work without a graph. I didn’t even have the script with me. I was to start shooting for the film much later but then some of my other schedules got cancelled and I allotted my dates to this film," he said.
He went on to add, "I am my worst critic and when I saw myself on the screen I was appalled. Isn’t it amazing that people have liked me in the film? Perhaps that’s because I am a fresh face. It’s not a performance I’d care to repeat or remember."
Instead of taking the credit for the movie's success, he contributed its achievement to others.
“Of course. I wish people could say that ‘the film’s music is good but Shah Rukh is better.’ But in Deewana, the music scored over everything. Due credit should go to the director Raj Kanwar, for his song picturization. Rishi Bhai also came up with a good performance as did Divya Bharti, Deven Verma and Amrish Puri," the Swadesh actor said.
"But if the film is to be remembered, it will be for Nadeem Shravan. A lot of films were 'smash hits' for their music. I’d love to be in their shoes now - be as successful as an actor as they are music directors," he added.
On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen in Pathan alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham. The movie is helmed by Siddharth Anand. SRK was last seen Zero opposite Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif that released in 2018.
