Re-releasing old classics or blockbusters from the past has been the new norm of late since the new movies are not working commercially as well as expected. The current Valentine’s Week saw Bollywood release some old classics from the black and white era to a few released just a decade ago re-releasing in the theaters.

From classics like Awara, Aradhana, to Chandni, Silsila, and majority of these movies have become cult classics over the years. Since these are old movies the response is low but that was expected. However, a few re-releases like Padmaavat and Bareilly Ki Barfi are not that old since most of the lead actors in these movies are still actively playing lead characters in the films.

Sanam Teri Kasam turns out to be a shocker

Along with Padmaavat and Bareilly Ki Barfi, another movie led by complete newcomers in those days- Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane was also re-released recently. While Padmaavat and Bareilly Ki Barfi created a lot of buzz and were decent hits, Sanam Teri Kasam was not even a average hit. The movie failed to give its lead stars a good hold in Bollywood.

However, 9 years later after its re-release, the movie is getting massive response. Incidentally it has earned more money in just two days during this weekend than its lifetime business. On the other hand the Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh movie helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been left far behind. Similarly, Kriti Sanon and Rajkummar Rao’s Bareilly Ki Barfi has also opened to a very low response.

So why is a movie like Sanam Teri Kasam which did not do well in 2016 is doing so well in 2025? Contrarily, why are hits like Padmaavat and Bareilly Ki Barfi are not getting expected response?

Changing mindsets of the audience has worked in favour of Sanam Teri Kasam

Sanam Teri Kasam is an original love story that is a pure romantic drama. On the other hand, the other two movies headed by big stars had more star-driven content and presentations than a compact storyline. Nevertheless, in the last few years, there have been many period and mythological movies like Adipurush , Tanhaji, Prithviraj, Shamshera, and so on.

People are no more eager to see such films which is why Padmaavat is not getting a good response. Ditto with Bareilly Ki Barfi. It was an average movie that focussed on a small town that discussed arranged marriage and its issues comically. At that time it was a novel subject. But 8 years later the novelty has worn off since a lot of content with similar storylines are every day released on digital platforms. On the other hand, Sanam Teri Kasam could not reach the masses in 2009 due to bad marketing strategies.

Secondly, the pair of Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane is still fresh for the audience since they were never seen together on the screen again. On the other hand, fans are used to watching Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh or Kriti, Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana and hence there is no novelty.
