Tommy Genesis 'Cheap Stunt' Stirs Controversy
In the clip, Tommy Genesis is seen holding the cross and using it in a manner that many found disrespectful. The clip features the rapper licking the cross and posing with it near her backside. Soon after the music video surfaced, it caused an uproar on social media.
Upset people from Hindu and Christian communities called it 'blasphemy' and accused her of being disrespectful to gain attention. Many even called it a 'cheap stunt' to go viral.
Strongly criticising Tommy Genesis, several social media users accused her of intentionally provoking religious communities.
One user wrote, "Just listened to Tommy Genesis whose real name is Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj. She is a Canadian artist with an Indian background from Kerala and Tamil side. Her new song openly mocks both Hindu and Christian faiths. This is not creativity this is pure disrespect. Surprised @YouTube still has it up. " (sic)
Another wrote, "This is Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj. Yasmine is a Canadian citizen of Malayalam, Tamil and Swedish descent. Her Indian descent makes it very likely that her makeup is deliberately done to hurt Hindu sentiments. Blasphemy." (sic)
Born in Vancouver, Canada, Genesis Yasmine Mohanraj comes from a mixed Tamil and Swedish background. She is known for her bold and experimental style and she often explores gender, identity, and sexuality in her music.
