After the unexpected debacle of 83, Ranveer Singh is back with YRF’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar. He has once again taken up the role of a Gujarati who will go to any length to save the life of his unborn daughter. Earlier he had played the role of a Gujarati hottie in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela.
The story of Jayeshbhai Jordaar revolves around the age-old issue of female infanticide in India due to which hundreds of female fetuses are killed in the mother’s womb every year. Unlike his previous movies like Simmba or Bajirao Mastani, Ranveer is not fighting any enemy in this film but the ideologies of his father and his family who want their son to bear a son so that the legacy of the family can move forward.
Jayesbhai aka Ranveer has an elder daughter and when his father who is the Sarpanch of the village with typical patriarchal beliefs comes to know that Ranveer’s wife is pregnant with a girl child yet again, he asks his son to abort the baby. But Ranveer flees with his wife and daughter to save his unborn girl child and what follows is a drama of run and chase as his family starts hunting for them.
The best thing about this movie is that it reflects the deeply rooted mentality of the Indian families which even today believe that only a male child can take their legacy further. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah play the role of the conservative parents of Ranveer Singh while Arjuna Reddy fame actress Shalini Pandey portrays his pregnant wife.
While the subject is quite serious, it has been presented with a hilarious twist as Ranveer is shown as a common village lad who is completely under the influence of his parents and belongs to a joint family. It is interesting to see how even a common man finds the guts to go against his parents once he decides to save his unborn girl child.
