Bollywood is gearing up for its most ambitious cinematic experiment yet- Ramayana. Bankrolled by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the two-part saga is expected to redefine the scale of Indian filmmaking. Headlined by Ranbir Kapoor and Yash, the film comes with a whopping budget of Rs 4,000 crore. With international collaborations, state-of-the-art technology, and a star lineup that spans generations, the makers aim to place India’s greatest epic on the global map of cinema.
'If the West doesn’t connect, it’s a failure...'
Speaking to the LA Times, producer Namit Malhotra stressed that the film is not being crafted just for Indian audiences but for viewers across the globe.
He explained, “It’s a global film from the day we start. I’m not trying to make it to appease Indian people in India… If you go and watch Ramayana and your family watches it, and people in India watch it, what’s the difference? It should speak to you like any other film.”
Malhotra emphasised that the Ramayana is not meant to be confined within religious or cultural interpretations. Instead, the goal is to craft a story that resonates with anyone.
Drawing parallels with iconic Hollywood spectacles, he said, “In my mind, if people in the West don’t like it, I consider that a failure. It is meant for the world. If you don’t like it, shame on me, we should have done a better job.”
The filmmaker likened his vision to films such as Avatar, Gladiator, and even the works of Christopher Nolan.
Nitesh Tiwari Highlights Universal Emotions
Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for films like Dangal, echoed his producer’s thoughts, insisting that Ramayana is rooted in feelings that transcend cultures.
“Emotions are universal. If the audience connects emotionally, they will connect with the story, no matter where they’re from,” he stated.
Casting Grandeur: Amit Sial Joins Ranbir, Yash as...?
The film boasts one of the most star-studded ensembles in recent Indian history. Ranbir Kapoor will be seen as Lord Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman, Amitabh Bachchan as Jatayu, and Ravi Dubey as Laxman, among others.
Recent reports also confirm that actor Amit Sial has joined the cast as Sugriv, the younger brother of Bali, who helped Lord Rama in his quest to rescue Devi Sita with the might of the 'Vanar Sena'. Sources suggest he has already shot a few scenes, while the team continues to refine his look for authenticity.
The first installment of Ramayana is locked for a grand Diwali 2026 release.
