Filmmaker Aanand L. Rai’s 2013 cult classic Raanjhanaa, starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor (Ahuja) and Swara Bhasker, left a lasting impact with its emotional ending. The audience was heartbroken when Dhanush’s Kundan took his final breath in a hospital bed. However, Raanjhanaa’s AI-altered climax, which has remained a topic of discussion for quite some time now, has rewritten that moment entirely. In the AI-altered version, Kundan is revived, and fans are left divided.
Heart-wrenching to Heart-winning or...?
The heart-wrenching climax of Aanand L Rai's cult hit Raanjhanaa left audiences shattered when Dhanush’s beloved character, Kundan, tragically breathed his last in a hospital bed.
However, in the AI-altered re-release, instead of dying, Kundan miraculously opens his eyes and walks away, undoing the original tragic ending.
The short clip of the AI-altered climax has gone viral on social media, sparking debates.
While some feel the change offers closure and healing, others opined that the AI-altered climax 'killed the soul' and emotional depth of the movie.
Here are a few reactions from netizens:

They didn’t just change the ending of Raanjhanaa using AI, they ripped the soul out of the movie😪#Raanjhanaa #RaanjhanaaReRelease pic.twitter.com/dsO4BKWnmB

We all wished Kundan lived; not for a fairytale ending, but because we felt his heartbreak when he said, “Par saala ab uthe kaun.” That pain, that imperfection, was what made Raanjhanaa raw, flawed, human and unforgettable.
Art isn’t meant to be “fixed” by code.…
Tough to pick between original ending where Kundan dies and AI altered version where he survives. But I'm sticking with the original. It hits harder and is the reason I fell in love with the film. #RaanjhanaaReRelease #Ambikapathy #Raanjhanaa @arrahman @dhanushkraja

Aanand L. Rai Distanced Himself From AI-Version of Raanjhanaa
Notably, with the announcement of Raanjhanaa's re-release with an AI-altered climax, director Aanand L. Rai publicly distanced himself from the edit.
In an official statement, Rai stated, "I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised. I had no role in it, nor did the team that made the film. Whatever it claims to be, it is not the film we intended or made."
Further, he stated, "If Raanjhanaa meant something to you, as it did to us, please know that this AI-altered version does not reflect who we were, nor does it carry the spirit of the film we made."
