Acclaimed Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra was all set to step into filmmaking with the much-awaited Meena Kumar's biopic, as a director. However, ending all speculations, recently he confirmed that the much-awaited biopic on late actress Meena Kumari has been shelved. During a recent interview, he clarified about stepping back as director and not proceeding with the project.
During a recent conversation with Mid-Day, Manish made the announcement of shelving Meena Kumari's Biopic and ended all the related speculations. However, he is still committed to fulfilling his long-standing aspirations of directing a movie.
Manish was quoted as saying, "I'm no longer doing the biopic. I'll direct something else. Directing is one dream that remains unfulfilled."

Furthermore, he also spoke about his passion for filmmaking and also admitted that not every fashion designer has a natural sense of filmmaking. For him, it was a major part of his childhood as he grew up watching classics. This influenced him and he has been keenly trying to learn more about it.
Moreover, he also said, that watching Mughal-e-Azam and Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt's work deeply influenced him.
"I'm steeped in films, and that's why I understand how it works," he added.

Reportedly, actress Kriti Sanon was the frontrunner to essay the role of Meena Kumari and was almost locked. However, before any official confirmation, Manish made the announcement disheartening many who were waiting for the biopic.
On the other hand, The Tragedy Queen's husband, Kamal Amrohi's grandson, Bilal Amrohi, also suggested the plan to make a biopic on Meena Kumari in association with a production house. However, no further updates have been obtained about it.
