War 2 from YRF is one of the most awaited Bollywood movies. With Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR paired against each other, the excitement for this sequel has always been high since it was announced that the South Indian star will play the lead antagonist. Unfortunately, the War 2 teaser released earlier this month left many fans disappointed with most of the social media users saying that even the thums-up advertisements are better than the action scenes between Hrithik and Tarak.
That has also triggered a debate about whether Bollywood is going backward. While the last few years have seen that the Hindi cinema is struggling for good content and delivering original scripts, when it comes to technical expertise, Ayan Mukerji had a good budget and hence had no reason to compromise, Even then the high-voltage scenes between Hrithik and Jr NTR did not spark interest. Rather it was the highly photoshopped bikini picture of Kiara Advani that stole away all the thunder.
Is the first bikini scene of Kiara a big achievement?
That speaks of the delusion in which today’s Bollywood stars are. They are not anxious to know how they have acted but are more focused on how they look and more so are sexy enough to tantalize the mindsets of the audience. While there have been few movies in the recent past like Crew or Queen that solely focus on women characters, even today most of the female-centric movies do not get buyers and even a good budget from producers.
Years ago a Bandini, Sujata, or even a Beta or Mr. India with the leading ladies getting the meatier role was so normal.
Nepotism at all levels is sucking Bollywood
Not only in acting or direction, nepotism is thriving like never before from top to bottom in Bollywood. Be it an assistant director, a makeup artist, or even a spot-person jobs are given based on who knows who and not what the person knows technically. It is common knowledge that kids from influential B-town families first work as Assistant Directors for big-budget movies and then become actors.
So at all levels more often the job does not go to people who are skilled but to those who have a better network in the industry.
More money laundering than the filmmaking industry
The focus of most of the production houses is to hit the 500 crore or 600 crore collection mark. The majority of commercial movies are made to earn huge rather than deliver better content. And that is why all the focus is on making it a big commercial entertainer adding whatever masala has been clicking to the film. Movies like Sikandar or Baby John are a good example of it.
Stars are overpowering the cinema and content
Nowadays, Bollywood movies are more about superstars, their entries, their entourage costs, their percentage in the overall collection, and their remuneration. Content, story, and entertainment come last with more often story being compromised to portray the hero as a larger-than-life persona on the big screen.
Directors lack the vision to use VFX properly
Most of the directors from Bollywood lack the vision and the expertise to use VFX properly in the cinema. When directors like Rajamouli have a vivid vision of characters in a movie, they can bring them alive with the help of VFX. But Bollywood directors fail here which is why what they want to show on the big screen may look good on the page but does not get translated as effectively on the silver screen and thus fails to impress.
Om Raut's Adipurush is a good example of this. The Tanhaji director had a powerful superstar to play Lord Rama but lacked the proper vision and knowledge to use VFX and the latest techicalities properly and the entire movie turned out to be a joke.
