Diljit Dosanjh has rocked the blue carpet of Met Gala 2025. While in India the excitement was all about Shah Rukh Khan ’s debut at the fashion event, it was Diljit who impressed with his typical royal ensemble and what’s more with the way he carried the entire look with aplomb. Many even felt that the look of the famous Punjabi singer was not according to the theme of Met Gala this year which was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”
Even then the impact was made and Diljit Dosanjh managed to make India proud because what he wore was a dressing style inspired by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. The traditional turban, tehmat and kurta was designed by Prabal Gurung whereas the jewel-studded accessories took inspiration from the jewels earlier worn by the Maharaja.
Diljit Dosanjh Met Gala look has a historical connection
The get up of Diljit has a historical connection and his jewellery has also been inspired by a special piece of diamond necklace commissioned by the Maharaja of Patiala. According to the historical accounts in 1928 the Maharaja commissioned the ornament making brand Cartier to make for him a diamond necklace of around 1000 carats, one of largest piece of jewellery ever made by the French jeweller.

It had total 2900 diamonds and at that time was priced at 10 crore which is around 2100 crore according to today’s valuation. The stylist of Diljit wanted to complete the look of the popular Punjabi singer with his set of jewellery but was told that it was a part of museum.
That is when Abhilasha Devnani asked Golecha, an Indian jeweller to create jewellery taking inspiration from the collection of Maharaja of Patiala. And in this way the entire jewel accessories including the brooch was designed for Diljit Dosanjh .

Emma Chamberlain, a famous YouTuber as well as fashionista surprised everyone when she wore the Patiala neckpiece of the Maharaja at Met Gala 2022. This particular neckpiece was part of a complete set of jewelry ensembles of Maharaja of Patiala and it had mysteriously vanished many decades ago.
When it surfaced like that at the Met Gala 2022 it sparked huge debates about the West looting Indian treasures for their benefit. It has appeared and disappeared many times and most of the time it kept on losing a few of its original diamonds.
While Cartier tried to restore its original glory by replacing original diamonds with synthetic diamonds as well as Zirconia, it can never be built to the level of worth and beauty that it possessed earlier.
