The upcoming action-thriller War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, has found itself at the center of a social media storm. The hashtag #BoycottWar2 began trending online after a section of netizens expressed outrage over its scheduled release date— August 14.

Though the movie is releasing on August 14, it is claimed as an 'Independence Day Release'. And, this seems not to have gone well with a section of fans who took to 'X' to vent out their anger.

What They Say:

Many users on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram have criticized the filmmakers for releasing the film a day before India’s Independence Day. They argue that it disrespects the sacrifices of the victims and the sentiments of grieving families.

“Everyone should boycott War 2! It looks just like another Pakistani propaganda film, which will show a Pakistani in a good light. Also, remember that Hrithik did not post anything against Pakistan during Operation Sindhoor,” shared a user.

Likewise, another user shared, “War 2 is releasing on Pakistani independence day, what a shame.”

“Bollywood is not even pretending anymore. They are releasing War 2 on 14th August and calling it Independence Day release! Whose independence are you celebrating - Bharat’s or your handlers across the border?” shared another user.

Does A Boycott Trend Over August 14 Release Date Hold Base?

1. There are instances when movies were released on August 14 and termed as Independence Day releases. Even movies set to release ahead of Diwali or Holi are being termed as 'Diwali release' or 'Holi release'.

2. In the South, it's a usual practice to release movies on Thursdays. As NTR is going to be the mass audience puller in this movie, the release of War 2 on a Thursday (August 14) is quite understandable.

Moreover, fans of Hrithik and NTR have come out in support of their favourite stars. They also argue that the August 14 release date, which falls on a Thursday, was strategically selected to maximize box office returns by leveraging the extended Independence Day weekend—a common practice in the industry.

Despite the explanation, public sentiment remains divided.
