During a recent chat with Komal Nahata on his podcast, The Game Changers, Varma spoke about the failure of his 2007 movie.

Varma started by stating that in filmmaking, the first primary mistake one can make is taking the decision of what one wants to do. Once that decision is made, nothing remains in control of the filmmaker. As Varma stated, RGV Ki Aag met with the same fate.

Varma said, "The real culprit is Sascha Sippy, the poster guy, and the people who were sitting next to me. In a way, also Bachchan sahab. But I am taking the blame for it.”

Further, the Department helmer said that originally he wanted to make revenge drama about a mill owner hiring a gangster to avenge his son's death. He also opined that if he had pursued his storyline, the film might have performed better.

Talking about RGV Ki Aag, Varma said that Sascha Sippy (grandson of Sholay producer GP Sippy) first pitched the idea of coming up with the sequel of the cult classic. Even, they had plans to bring Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan on board in their adaptation. However, Varma didn't give a nod to the idea.

Notably, it was Big B's dream to play the baddie Gabbar Singh in Sholay. His dream was fulfilled years later with RGV Ki Aag. However, the audience couldn't accept their matinee idol in the notorious dacoit Babban Singh's role.
