Much before tying the knot with Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan was engaged to Karisma Kapoor in 2002. Karisma was poised to become the Bachchan family's bahu. Abhishek and Karisma had reportedly been in a relationship for five years. Abhishek and Karisma's relationship had all of Bollywood buzzing as it brought two celebrated film families. However, the much-awaited celebrity wedding was called off soon after announcing their engagement.

The called-off wedding was a sensitive and distressing time for the Bachchan family, and it took an emotional toll on Abhishek. On the other hand, for Karisma, it was a traumatic experience.

Called-off Wedding Took Emotional Toll on Abhishek

Years after, Amitabh Bachchan opened up about the emotional toll the broken engagement took on his son and their family. The legendary actor called it a difficult yet defining moment in their lives.

In 2005, Big B opened up about Abhishek and Karisma's called-off wedding in an episode of Koffee With Karan. He described it as a sensitive and distressing time for the family, especially for his son. He further said that while such situations are painful, parting ways is sometimes the better option if circumstances aren't favourable for a lasting reunion. He also called the broken engagement a part of God's plan.

For Karisma, It Was a Traumatic Experience

During an old interview with Subhash K Jha, recalling her called-off wedding with Abhishek, Karisma shared that it was a traumatic experience for her.

Karisma said, "It is time I spoke. I owe it to everyone. The beginning of this year was traumatic for me. I wouldn’t wish any girl to go through it. I was forced to deal with my hurt and pain on my own. I guess time is the best healer. Though I have been through a lot, I have come to terms with whatever has happened. All I will say is, whatever is destined is bound to happen."

"I was emotionally unprepared to confront my problems. Life deals you different cards. You have to just go with the shuffle," she added.

She also thanked the media for being understanding and supportive and leaving her alone. Karisma also credited her family, Babita (mother), Randhir (father), Kareena (sister), Krishna (grandmother), and Rima Jain and Ritu Nanda (aunties), for helping and supporting her through the tough time and coming out of trauma.
