Ahead of his breakthrough movie Dev D, a modern adaptation of Devdas, he decided to leave the limelight and move to New York.
Abhay shared that he moved to New York to distance himself from the overwhelming attention that came from stardom.
During an interview with Humans of Bombay, Abhay shared insights into his decision to step away from the industry during the peak of his career.
He said, "I was finding it hard to deal with the attention and fame because I started getting flashbacks of when I was a kid. I was a sensitive child and didn't like the attention. I liked the art, creativity, and medium."
He further added, "I knew Dev D was going to be big, but I didn't want to be famous. But, at the same time, I wanted to act."
Explaining his flashbacks, Abhay said, "When I looked at the industry, I just saw the trauma as a kid and remembered the experiences that my Tayaji and my brothers had gone through. The things they said, the stories they had, and the system that was in place. It's called the glamorous industry, but there's nothing glamour in it. All my fears were there. I just felt like walking away."
"I was afraid of being famous and everything that came with it," he added.
Abhay Went Into 'Self-Destructive' Mode!
Abhay also revealed that his internal struggles played a significant role in his decision to leave. As the Raanjhanaa actor revealed, after dealing with inner conflicts, he focused more on the negatives.
Talking about going into 'self-destructive' mode, Abhay said, "I was just in New York, playing the part I played in Dev D, getting drunk, not working, and being terrible with my money."
