The University Grants Commission (UGC) has served show-cause notices to 18 medical colleges in the country that have allegedly failed to obtain anti-ragging undertakings from their students.
As per the official UGC notice, the highest three medical colleges each from Andhra Pradesh and Bihar have been issued the show-cause notices, followed by two colleges each in Assam, Delhi, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and one each from Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh.
UGC has clearly stated that the medical colleges have not complied with the mandatory requirements set in the Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009 for curbing the menace of ragging.
The Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2009 clearly mandates that every student and their parent/guardian must submit an anti-ragging undertaking at the time of admission and at the beginning of every academic year.
Official sources said that such undertaking is a crucial measure to prevent and deter any incidents of ragging within educational institutions.
“The failure to secure these undertakings not only constitutes non-compliance with the regulations but also puts the wellbeing and safety of students at risk,” said UGC in its latest notice.
The UGC has asked the defaulting medical colleges to submit a written explanation within seven days, failing which necessary actions with imposition of penalties and other corrective measures will be taken.
