Odisha Revises Age Limit For Class 1 Admission
After extensive discussions with educationists and experts, the Odisha government has decided to set the minimum age for admission into Class 1 at six years or above, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This move aims to ensure the holistic and structured academic development of students, aligning with global educational standards.
In Odisha, the implementation of NEP 2020 will commence from the academic session 2025-26. As part of this initiative, the age requirement for Class 1 admission has been officially set at six years or older. The decision is expected to enhance the learning experience of children by providing them with a strong foundational education before progressing to higher classes.

Additionally, to facilitate a smoother transition and accommodate students, the government has revised the age calculation criteria. Previously, children were required to complete six years of age by March 31 to be eligible for admission.
However, considering the needs of parents and students, the deadline has been extended to September 1, informed School and Mass Education Department on Tuesday.
This extension will provide greater flexibility to students and ensure they receive adequate early education before stepping into primary school.
The education department has emphasized that this decision aligns with national policies and will be implemented effectively across all schools in the state. Schools and parents have been urged to take note of the revised admission criteria and plan accordingly for the upcoming academic year.
